Yes, Lori, it is lots of gardens! Two nights ago I watered from 10pm-2am and it still wasn't wet enough. Thank goodness it rained all night last night so finally got soaked through. Alaska is such a big state with many types of growing seasons. In Fairbanks we plant outdoors around the first weekend in June after the danger of frost has passed (most years!). Our summers can get into the 90's in July, but it is usually 50's on rainy days to 70's on sunny days. Most of the time we can grow into the first week of September. We get snow anytime from the end of August (a bad year) to sometime in October (a really good year). The temp. is usually 0 to -10, but we have stretches of -20 to -50. I've seen it -65 before. Schools do not close, but after -50 attendance is optional. Spring can come mid-March to the middle of May depending on the year. Last summer is was a record setting year...hot by May and a late winter. This year Spring didn't come until mid-May and it's cool most of the time. I hear a lot of complaining this season! So that was the long-winded version to tell you on a "normal" year we have snow mid-Sept through mid-April. May and August are cool, June and July are hot (for us!). I'm at the point in my life where 40 years of snow are enough. I don't like to be cold and I like to garden and farm so I should probably live somewhere else. If it wasn't for all the kids my husband and I would relocate...guess we'll have to graduate a few first! Thanks for the interest.
