THE SKOOG FARM

Here are several shots of our house and property.   The deed was dated April 15th, 1853 and the farm was owned by Charles Nelson.  In his will (June 1886) he said:  "I also give and bequeath to said wife, her heirs and assigns my best covered buggy my best single harness, my wolf robe and my horse known as 'Flora.'  ....later he says (to his son for carrying on the farm) "all the farming tools and implements which he shall consider needful for such purpose, two best cows. 3 best swine, 65 best sheep and 20 fowls and all the horses and colts on the farm except said Flora...."  His wife, Charlotte, died on January 8, 1896.  The farm went through other family members and in 1959 the MacVeans purchased it.  We bought 5 acres with the house and barns from them...the tenant house was sold with 2 acres and the remaining 140 plus acres went to a local farmer.  A lot has taken place here over the years.
Reading the wills, abstracts and history has been so interesting.  Oddly enough, the wife of the man I buy hay from, was part of the family of Bertha Nelson, who owned the farm in the 1930s.  There used to be a barn for the workhorses where we now have the pergola.  It burned down over 60 years ago.  Gary broke up the cement flooring an created a stone wall around the garden.  So many stories.....
