The highlight of my day was going over to the college with 4 other members of our Center Committee for a panel discussion being held at The Eagle's Look Out.
It is located in Tuttle North and was a perfect meeting space.
We were invited by Dr. Pamela Haibach (an Associate Professor), who is the Co-Director of the Institute of Movement Studies for Individuals with Visual Impairments, the Kinesiology Major Coordinator, and International Studies Coordinator. The issue for this class was the relationship between seniors and activity. We fit the bill.
We started off as a panel and were asked questions by the students. "Have you ever been effected by discrimination due to age?" "What advice do you have for us to live long healthy lives." "How has the Senior Center improved your life?" "Has your health improved because of the advancement of technology throughout the years?" "Up until now, do you feel that your life has gone as expected?" "Are you healthier/happier at this point in your life than you expected?" and many more. Most of them were Juniors and Seniors and they were very attentive.
We eventually split up and joined the tables for more questions. The students did not expect us to be so energetic and tuned in...
It was an outstanding experience both ways. They probably had never given much thought to some of our responses and I'm quite sure we had an impact. I would do this again in a heart beat. As a matter of fact, Hanny was able to get several of the girls at her table to sign up as volunteers and I think we will be seeing them again. Many thanks to Dr. Haibach for inviting us. This should happen more often.
Night all.
Good looking bunch!

Wow! What am amazing thing you did there, looks like a fab place to learn too.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful event, and I'm sure you all benefited from time together, great questions, and they would need thoughtful answers. The follow-on sounds so good. Hope your night sky was equally lovely. Jean.
