We are getting into that time of year when the sunrise keeps getting more and more beautiful.
Although the last two days have been hot and humid, we have not had rain for awhile....maybe long enough to allow Ted to make some hay for us.
Gary has been weeding the gardens and more things are starting to pop....like the tomatoes. On any given day we must have at least 50 cucumbers that are looking for homes. I see sauce making in our near future.
At 9:30 our friend Jay came over to help Gary take down two English Walnut trees. Fortunately they were not like the two enormous ones we had taken down last year.
The girls were curious....
Class at 10:30. All kinds of activity.
Jay stopped in to have a look.
These pressed flower cards are such fun.
Jay left around 1 and Gary spent much of this VERY HOT afternoon cleaning up the yard.
While I was mowing, noticed that a cabbage was ready to be picked. First time we have grown them.
So I made coleslaw.
The carrots were from our garden....
and so were the peppers. Bought the organic apples at Weggies.
Next, I prepared some of our own potatoes (first time for growing them too) so I could
roast them. Better than traditional French fries...really.....
When we have corn on the cob I cut the kernels off any that was not eaten and save it for something like this. Just happened to have a load in the freezer.
We have not been home long enough to have home cooking, and tonight was the night. Hungry for sloppy joes, open faced on nice toasted rolls.
Put it all together, and it was truly a pig out. The Skoog Farm garbage plate. Gary, Karen and I had no complaints.
Finished mowing the lawn and rolled out to the barn to do chores. All the girls got sponged off with a peppermint wash. They were hot and Abbe was filthy from rolling.
It sure is dark out.
Night all.
Hello Lori. Reading your blog almost makes me wish we had a bigger garden. On the other hand we have five espaliered fruit trees, and a box hedge surrounded area that is Ann's herb garden, and that really is all we need these days. But the meals that you make from mostly home grown fruit and vegetables do look delicious. Well done!!!
ReplyDeleteP.s. We have been given a good deal of fruit by friends who have had a glut of it (thanks to this glorious summer we've had), and it's time we went out picking 'fruits wild by nature', and making sloe gin, and apple and blackberry pies; so we're not complaining.
ReplyDeleteLori, I love those golden light photos! And the pressed flower art is really cool. I might even be able to do something like that!
ReplyDeleteThe lease horse didn't work out. She was a nice horse, but she had a soundness issue that as a leaser I wouldn't want to take on. Spine injections, etc. If she was my girl, she'd be retired. I have a few more possibilities to check out - will keep you posted.
