The darkness faked us out this morning. After almost 2 weeks without rain we got a fair amount last night and looked like we were going to get more when I went out to do chores. Dreary.
Berlin still looked like a bumpkin.
After chores I shredded some paper in the grooming room while Karen worked on Maggie and Angel.
I must say, that after their 36 hour trailer ride, they are looking very good and doing well. Karen pays close attention to everything about them.
Berlin acted like nothing was wrong and did her thing out in the pasture.
This was a very busy day...I was hardly in the house and the dogs felt neglected.
My first meeting (11-12) was at the Village Hall. We were getting organized for the unveiling of a new mural that will be installed and then celebrated on October 19th. Looks like we are set, and I can't wait to show you the finished product.
Got home in time to get ready for meeting number two at the Morgan Manning House.
I joined a History Club a couple of months ago and it meets two times a month. Who would ever guess I would be pouring coffee at such a gathering?
Unfortunately I had to leave early as the vet was coming to look at Berlin and Moon. I hurried home and our 3 o'clock appointment started closer to 4:30.
By then, Berlin looked her absolute worst. There were more hives on her barrel, shoulders and the tops of her front legs. All along, her temperature has been normal, eating as usual and acting like nothing was wrong....just looked scary. Lots of crud on her face from the weeping. I had given her 4 washes and no matter what was done, she did not improve.
Dr. L. said that indeed it was hives and probably came from something she ate or inhaled. First she was given a shot of dex....., and now she is on antibiotics and a couple of other things to get this under control. Hopefully I will see a change by morning and then we will continue treatment for the next 6 or 7 days.
Moon had a very long cut under her tail on the right side that was relatively deep (among a few other scrapes from her kicking match with Maggie). Too late to stitch it, but she too is now on antibiotics and it needs to be flushed and packed with a cream the vet suggested. No driving for at least two weeks. Worse than that, her weight has become an issue and she will really need to be careful with her grass intake. She has been wearing a grazing muzzle for several weeks, but needed to start wearing it a long time ago. Lorrie can continue to exercise her and we'll have to do our best to put her on a diet. She only gets 1/2 cup of grain morning and night with 1/4 cup of beet pulp. There are no dry lots here, and I can't imagine locking her up most of the day. Guess her Mom will be entertaining her away from the green stuff.
For starters, we are going to start putting them in at 5:30 instead of 7.
More stall cleaning, but this crew seems to like the comfort of their suites.
By the time Lorrie and I took care of our ponies and the rest of the herd it was too late for me to go to First Friday. Oh well.
For a couple of hours I could not find this nice little leather pouch that holds moola and my drivers license. Better than a big wallet as I can stuff it in my camera bad (which I carry 90% of the time).
Boy was I relieved when it turned up.
Night all.
Here's hoping my girl looks more like herself in the morning.
By the way, thanks for all the concern you have shown for my 29 year old sweetheart!

I hope everything looks better in the morning. She's such a trooper and good girl. Poor thing.
ReplyDeleteMay all your girls stay well, improve in health, and keep off anything that can cause all this upset. Lovely flowers, among all your equine family pics, perfect pick-me-up. Greetings from Jean.
ReplyDeleteBless you and your sweet equines.

Oh poor Berlin and poor Moon, those two need to stop fooling around.. I have never heard of hives in horses I learn something new everyday. I do hope both of them heal quickly. Hug B
